    Cyrillic script or mkhedruli???

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me? I%26#39;m going to be in Tbilisi with a group of friends for the Georgia vs Scotland match in October, and when we travel together for a match we often get t-shirts made. I wanted to write something on the t-shirts that Georgians would be able to read, and until today I didn%26#39;t realise that Georgian was written in a different script than Russian. If we wore t-shirts that had something written in cyrillic script would this cause offence with the local population? The last thing we%26#39;d want would be to offend people, so would this be okay?

And if it%26#39;s better to use mkhedruli, could anyone help me with a wee bit of translation???

    Cyrillic script or mkhedruli???

Most of the people cans till read cyrillic and a T-shirt with cyrillic script will not be interpreted as an offence by Georgians. However, if in your text on the t-shirt addresses locals, you should have it printed in Georgian :) Will be happy to help you with text. giomarr@hotmail.com

The football match will be shown on just about every television (that works) in Georgia.

However, the Hangar Bar definitely has full live coverage on their wide screens both inside and outside.

The owner told me last night that there will be a party in the Hangar after the match with complimentary beer for all Scottish supporters who watch the match there.

Not bad for an Irish Pub...!!!

I%26#39;d really appreciate a few answers to questions I have about Tbilisi.

    1. Are there any good fitness clubs in Tbilisi? I%26#39;m a Gym Rat, and I don%26#39;t see where any hotels have clubs in them ( good running treadmills, Lifecycles, weightroom, etc). I%26#39;d prefer an actual fitness club as I may be in Tbilisi for at least two years, working.

    2. Would you recommend I bring my bike ( road bicycle) with me? Are there long stretches of good paved road in or around Tbilisi to get some long, hard riding in? Not peddling around town kind of riding, but fairly fast distance riding with as few stops as possible.

    3. Can a guy get around in taxis, meet people, conduct daily business and such speaking only English in Tbilisi?

Thanks much ahead a-time for any help I can get. Thing is, I%26#39;m in the process of choosing between Tbilisi, Nairobi, and Ho Chi Minh City for work and I haven%26#39;t been to any of them. Being able to do my hobbies plays into my decision. Thanks.

    DonPhoenix

    Hi DonPhoenix,

Answers to your three questions as follows:

    1. Fitness Clubs

There are three good fitness clubs here in Tbilisi. The two Marriotts have modern gyms with kit you describe and there is also a fitness club at Betsy%26#39;s Hotel. You can check out there websites for further info.

We are just construction the new Radisson Hotel that will also have a cutting edge fitness club. You can see the new Radisson on our website http://ds.com.ge then follow the link to Raddison. The Radisson page also has a link to our webcam that shows the construction site in real time 24/7.

    2. Cycling

Tbilisi itself is not much for the sort of cycling you describe and in any case the Georgian drivers show little respect on the road. The roads are much better outside although places to go are few and far between.

    3. Getting Around.

Most of my getting around in Tbilisi is walking but sometimes I use a taxi. Most taxi drivers speak little English and a good idea is to have your various destinations written down in Georgian. There are thousands of taxis here. The only place I%26#39;ve ever seen more is in Cairo. Meeting people here is not difficult. After you%26#39;ve been here a while you%26#39;ll soon settle into the kind of places you like. In general Tbilisi is quite a friendly place. Doing business here in English is not difficult. There are translators available and if you are doing day to day business for a couple of years it would pay you to have a permanent translator. There is a one or two I can recommend to you.

    4. Choosing location

Your choice of locations is wide and varied. Let%26#39;s hope you choose Tbilisi. After a work out in the gym you%26#39;ll love the hot springs and sulfur baths. I go there most Sundays (if I%26#39;m not working). You can check them out on one of the many Tbilisi websites.

    Hope the above helps.....

    C_B

Thanks, Caicos Boy. That%26#39;s what I wanted to hear (except for the biking, but I can deal with that). Thanks again.

    Don

    Hi there

I think Caisos Boy is understating the driving habits and I forgot to mention in my last post..... they are bonkers, its wacky races on the roads and Iv driven all over Europe. If your into cyclying and like hills Tbilisi is sort of in a valley so there is good cycling outside of the city buy the city itself you are taking your life in your hands.

    Location of Marriott

Just wondering whether the Marriott on Rustaveli and the Courtyard Marriott are really 500m apart? Not sure if its worth paying the extra $40 a night to be located on Rustaveli Avenue? Advice please.

    Location of Marriott

    Hi MrSporran

The two Marriott Hotels are probably a little further than 500m apart but not much.

The Marriott on Rustaveli is a 5 Star Hotel and the Courtyard is..... well a Marriott Courtyard.

If you plan on being outside most of the time then the cheaper Courtyard is for you. However my choice would always be the Marriott on Rustaveli. However I%26#39;m a little biased as I spent four years on the Marriott refurbishment taking from the bombed out shell from the Tbilisi war to what it is today.

If you are in Tbilisi on a Sunday, the Sunday brunch at the Marriott is about the best value in the world. For GEL 65 ($39) you can eat and drink as much as you want from noon until 4pm. We generally arrive at 11:59am and leave at 4:01pm The drinks include champagne, wine and beer.

When do you plan to come to Tbilisi. New faces are always welcome.

    C_B

    Location of Marriott

    C_B,

Thanks for the information which is a good help. Just last night we booked the Courtyard. The corporate deal we got with Expedia was just too good to refuse.

We are part of the Tartan Army, and are visiting for the match against Georgia. We arrive on Sunday 14th October and leave on Saturday 20th, so that should give us plenty of time to explore what appears to be a wonderful country (either side of Scotland thrashing Georgia, of course ;--)

Just make sure the bars are well stocked!

    Thanks again.

    Mr S

I%26#39;ll be popping into the Courtyard when you are there. I%26#39;ll listen out for some distinctive Glaswegian accents and ask for Mr S

    C_B

Make sure you do, C_B, and make sure you say hello. However, you may not make work the next day if you end if in a round with the Tartan Army. ;-)

    Regards,

    Mr S

Not making work the next day for the ';right'; reasons ain%26#39;t a problem for me.

However getting that far in the Marriott is an expensive hobby. I%26#39;ll show you the cheaper way in better bars.

    C_B

Admittedly, this is taken from a rather unreliable %26#39;rag%26#39; here in Scotland.

I am really looking forward to this trip next month, and cant believe it to be true.

C_B, I%26#39;ve not forgotten your kind offer and I%26#39;ll send you an e-mail later. Cheers, bud!

    Tbilisi to Batumi

Any thoughts on what%26#39;s the best way to travel from Tbilisi to Batumi (on a Sunday, if that matters at all)? Anything interesting on the way that would justify hiring a car for a day? How long should the ride take by train, bus or a shuttle taxi? Thanks a lot!

    Tbilisi to Batumi

I always travel by the train. It takes about 8 hours. There is also an overnight sleeper train but very uncomfortable and you don%26#39;t know who you will share with.

    C_B

    Tbilisi to Batumi

Well. Travelling by a train is not for 8 hours. Its just for 6 hours and not very much interesting. as u just sit or maybe walk and wait. The best way is by car. you will be travelling over half of Georgia and will be able to stop at any nice place you like to see. Travelling by car will take about 6 hours or even more as im sure you would like to stop at many nice places on your way to Tbilisi.

There are mini buses from Batumi for 18 L. They are leaving every hour but you will not be able stop it at any place you like.

So if you have home and time take a car and enjoy your travelling.

    Good luck

Im sure you will like it.

    Weather watch

    Hello,

I%26#39;ll be heading to your lovely city in four weeks time as part of the Tartan Army (and I%26#39;m even more excited after our win in Paris on Wednesday!)

Anyway, apart from my kilt and talcum powder, ;-) , should I be packing?

What%26#39;s the climate like at that time of year, generally?

    Cheers!

    Weather watch

The weather here is cooling down now after quite a hot summer. It%26#39;s difficult to say exactly what the weather will be like but you will certainly need a jacket etc.

I suggest you wear something under the kilt..!!

    C_B

    Weather watch

    Hi Mr Sporran

I am also hoping to travel to for this game. What route are you taking? Most people seem to be travelling via Riga with AirBaltic. I%26#39;m looking at all options.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Andy

    Hello Andy,

We%26#39;re travelling with BA, Glasgow - Heathrow - Tbilisi. We leave on the Sunday morning (probably with a raging hangoever after the Saturday game) and come back on the Saturday. We paid £550 each, though the price has gone up (best I can find for those flights is with Opodo).

The Air Baltic route is indeed popular, but I think their prices have gone up too. The best priced scheduled flights I can see at the moment are with Turkish Airlines at about £500.

There%26#39;s also the Passport travel option, if time is an issue.

Let me know what you decide. I cannae wait for this trip, should be a cracker.

    Alex

    C_B,

Thanks for the advice. It sounds like the weather could be quite changeable, unlike the tropical conditions we%26#39;re used to in Scotland.

So, I%26#39;ll bring me kilt and two Scotland tops, then. I can double up if its chilly. ;-)

    Hi Mr Sporran

E-mail me on dudingeo@hotmail.com and I%26#39;ll give you my mobile number and we%26#39;ll meet up in the Marriott on Monday.

There%26#39;s definitely cheaper options for a few beers and I%26#39;ll be glad to show you around.

    C_B

    Andy

Passport Travel are full. I tried to book with them on Monday.

The Riga option came in about £550 (only business class left on the journey out with Air Baltic). That includes £100 for Prestwick to Riga. You need to stay one night in Riga with that option.

I got flights today with Lufthansa from Edinburgh for £512 through Opodo but the prices seem to be up and down all the time. This option has two stop overs in Frankfurt and Munich. The stop over in Munich on my booking is 35 minutes but I%26#39;m told that the plane from Frankfurt to Munich then goes on to Tbilisi - I hope it is!

The other option I looked at was Prestwick to Stansted (£50 Ryan Air) and Heathrow-Instanbul-Tbilisi with Turkish (£540 through Thomas Cook). You obviously have to navigate your way from Stansted to Heathrow. BMI had suitable flights from Glasgow to Heathrow for £120.

I haven%26#39;t booked any accomodation yet. Are there any good suggestions? I%26#39;m travelling on my own so I%26#39;d feel a little safer with a few other TA about.

    McOne,

Good to hear from a fellow footsoldier here. Regarding flights, I think you can still go with Turkish Airines (via Istanbul, supposedly).

There are still places on our flight, with BA. It costs a bit more, but its by far the most convenient in terms of times and transfers, and there%26#39;s the luxury of a minbus transfer when we get there.

Onto accommodation now. You can get duck cheap digs, but I wouldn%26#39;t go for that, myself. We didn%26#39;t go on a summer holiday this year (loads of work being done to the flat), so decided to %26#39;splash out%26#39; a bit a stay at the Courtyard Marriot. It looks a great hotel in a smashing location. There are other TA staying there. A good base to explore the museums and art galleries (ahem) of the city.

I hope you make it. It will be a fantastic trip, I%26#39;m sure, and who%26#39;d have thought that when we booked this up months and months ago, the game would be so meaningful

    I simply cannot wait!!!

    Mr S

Apologies, McOne, on reading again I see you have your flights booked.

We were booked into the Hotel Primavera, but changed it after we got a cracking deal with the Courtyard. We originally were looking at the Hotel Ambassadori, but it seemed a wee bit too out the way, in terms of nightlife.

Remember to let us know what you decide. And hopefully, we%26#39;ll see you for a beer in Tbilisi.

    Thanks MrS,

I checked the rates for the Courtyard previously because I know a few lads that are staying there. Leaving it so late to book and travelling myself the £250 quid that they are looking for two nights is a bit steep.

Do you know which hotels are close to the Courtyard?

That%26#39;s very steep for the Courtyard. We%26#39;re there for a week, and its about £800 for the two of us. It seems the hotels are cashing in.

As for other hotels in the vicinity, C_B on this forum should be more help than me.

Still up for that pint, though?

    Georgian ministry website virus-infected?

Anyone know anything about this? The Min of Foreign Affairs website is setting my anti-virus ablaze! Won%26#39;t let me open it, alerting that trojans present.

Anyway, if anyone can help, I%26#39;m looking for advice - will our hotel issue a letter of invitation to suport visa application? We are UK so don%26#39;t need one but we have fellow travellers from a country that does. Asked the hotel but they said, go and check with the Ministry. Thanks in advance.

    Georgian ministry website virus-infected?

    This is a bulshit!

    What they wear in Georgia

Hi, This may sound like a strange request but my son is doing a report on Georgia. He chose it because he found it to be intriguing and wanted to learn more about it. We have found a lot of information except for one subject: ';dress of the people.'; Can anyone help? Thank you!

    What they wear in Georgia

Hello, I am Maia from Tbilisi, Georgia:) very happy for your sons%26#39; decision! I would be glad if I can help somehow:)

Georgians dress up the same way as Europeans do, though there are traditional dressings that people used to wear in the past, different for different regions, this traditional dressings partially is maintained in Georgian traditional dances. For the last period there is a fashion for weddings, when couple, mainly bride groom is dressed in traditional dress.

I hope this information will help a bit, maybe the website of tourism department can help www.tourism.gov.ge

for any information, do not hesitate, will be happy to help if I can:)

Thank you so much for your response! The website proved very useful. What I%26#39;ve found in helping my son research your country is that the people are so friendly. That is very admirable. Thank you again, Maia!

Me and my partner are planning to visit the USA next year and one of our favourite films is Fried Green Tomatoes. We know the Whistle Stop Cafe and Jarrel House is in Juliette we just wondered if anyone could offer us any advice.

    Cost of Living

    Hi,

Never been in Russia before and we do have plans of going there because we have an engineering project coming up at Tbilisi Georgia. I just would like to ask the cost of living there at Tbilisi?

    1. How much is the rent for a month for an apartment?

    2. How about a small room? rent?

    3. How about the food? for a meal, how much does it cost for 1 set of meal?

    4. Transportation? minimum fare? bus? train? taxi?

    5. Clothing? how much is 1 shirt and pants?

    6. Groceries? For a week, how much do I need for me to have enough supplies toiletries, food, laudry stuffs etc.

Those things I need to know.

    Thanks.

    Cost of Living

    Hello

you have a lot of questions, it seems :)))

first of all, let me say that Tbilisi is quite a cheap city, if you aren%26#39;t searching something west-europian. here is a lot of turkish production, but cannot say they have bad quality. just you must know what to buy and what - better not to buy

    so

1)first of all, let me ask what do you mean in apartment :)

2)it depends on condition and place the flat is situated. from 100$ usually, but if you want modern flat, in good condition - maybe from 300$

3)cuisine is really delicious, prices - quite normal. for dinner 7$ is quite OK, of course you can spend much more :)

4)bus and the train (underground) have the same price - 40 Tetri (1Gel=100 Tetri, 1USD=1,5Gel), or you can buy monthly ticket for 25Gel (they are different for bus and for underground)

also there are mini-buses, more confortable then buses, and price for that is 50Tetri

for taxi you must count 60 Tetri per Km+1Gel, it means from 3Gel to 10Gel from city centre to anywhere in the city :)

    5) quite cheap - again, if you aren%26#39;t searching for something west-european. shirts - from 25Gel, pants are a little expensive

    6) difficult to say, it depends the quality you are searching for.

you must first decide, what type of living you are planning - to have every dinner in the restaurant, of have a kitchen and made some meals at home. of course, the second case is much cheeper. you can live here for 200Gel per month (not including the rent for flat, and transportation if you are going by taxi), or maybe 500 will not be enough - denepending on your demands

    Job offer in Tbilisi

I just received a job offer to live in Tbilisi. I have a husband who is a teacher and two children (15mo and 5yrs). I don%26#39;t know *anything* about life there. To this point, all of my experience is in SE Asia and the LAC region, so this is coming from left field.

Any information you can supply would be wonderful. Some ideas:

    -Food

-Climate (all of online material say it is specific to the region)

-Ease of living in Tbilisi w/o knowing the language

-Info on QSI (the international school)

    -Cost of living

    -Ease of finding childcare

-Do they have modern gyms (weird question, I know - but it%26#39;s important to me. :) )

-Ease of use of public transportation

    -Safety

    -Recreation

    -Accomodations

-Anything else you can think of.

Thank you so much for your help.

    Job offer in Tbilisi

I have visited Georgia several times but not lived there. The visits were full of the warmth and legendary hospitality for which Georgia is justly known.

I have a friend who lived in Tbilisi for a year teaching ESL. My impression is that the winter is quite grim (cold in a country that is not set up for the cold) and that security can still be an issue. Summers are hot and humid; in the summer, the country is green as Ireland.

I also have an acquaintance who was posted there for a number of years who was very sorry when that posting ended. Finally, I have a friend who has married a Georgian woman and has two young sons there. He spends quite a bit of time in North America, but I am pretty sure that he would prefer to be in Tbilisi year-round.

If you are still looking for information, I%26#39;m pretty sure any of these individuals would be willing to give their impressions.

I have received a message from a Limited Liability Company in Republic of Adzharia-Georgia for making Investments in the Batumi Sea Trading Ports. Dont you think that the Investments in the said ports will provide lots of opportunities in enhancing the Trades in the Region as well as to move further in extensions of the shipping services to those Areas and Regions where the said ports has No link yet.

im georgian, currently living in london, prefer london to tbilisi to tell u the truth, but ill try to be objective on the topics of ur interest:

    1. food--great:)) really.

    2. winter does not get lower than -3-5, mainly 0, in Tbilisi u dont get much snow. it can be muddy and wet thou. but most of the modern flats are equipped with relevant heating systems therefore not a big problem. can go skiing there are two great resorts. summer july-august very hot in town, most of the people with children go to nearby cooler resorts, most of them are located within 30min drive of tbilisi. otherwise, climate is very good.

    3. not many people in streets talk english, but most of them will be willing to help with the bad knowledge they have--people seem to be helpful of foreigners.

    4. i think it is ok, several of my friends children go there and i havent heard much complaints.

    5. cost of living compared to any western country or US very low. food products are cheap, and organic stuff in the markets very tasty and even cheaper than in supermarkets. food in georgia (vegs and fruits) definitely the best ive ever had in any other country. taxis 1.5-3 pounds any destination. gas 0.5 pounds litre. overall, quite cheap living.

    6. nannies are cheap, i paid 120$ month, but maybe problems with english speaking ones. if u find them probably have to pay more.

    7. YES, there are two very good modern gyms, u can look it up--vake swimming pool and fitness center (i went there and really really like it) and nautiluss center, which has more spas and stuff, first is more sporty. there are other hotel gyms which many people enjoy, like marriott and sheraton ones, but vake is the best.

    8. taxis--cheap. there are microbusses, but u dont wanna go there, hot and crowded. plus, can get a driver with his car probably at 100-150USD month.

    9. preferrable to live in central areas with security guards, most of the newly build appartment houses have them. otherwise not very unsafe, but not very safe either. not as bad as it used to be.

    10. for children there is a zoo, several parks, not any type of luna parks or six flags or something but ok. picnic and camping potential. several clubs, eating out is pretty good, good food and bars. circus.

    11. newly build appartment buildings most of the time, as mentioned, with security guards.

hope its helpful. i would recommend going there for one or two years, its very different, interesting, u could do excursions to different very beautiful and interesting parts of the country and region (turkey, armenia, azerbaijan, russia, black sea). very good skiing resorts as well as mineral water resorts (borjomi--likani--beautiful!) resorts are being reconstructed to atract tourists

Well to bad that Americans need no visa to visit Tbilisi, but Georgians need a visa(almost impossible to get) to visit USA.

Ok,gabrichidze!i didn%26#39;t say about georgians ,but americans!and i didn%26#39;t say, that is good for georgians having so big problem to get a visa to usa!hope, that this might change one day!it must change!when people have more possibilities and politics will change!you know what i mean...bolosdabolos sakrtvelom tavis xalxs xom unda mouaros da elementalurad normaluri pirobebi sheukmnas..mashin...kvelaperi mocesrigdeba....

DULLNESS! why should they go to Georgia without visa when Georgians need whole months to get one from them. + ';AMERICANS'; u say as if they r gods or something for you...blaahhh ...remember bout your culture and history and proudness people!!! ....and are u happy that they don%26#39;t need Visa and u need to ask them an year for one?

Please don%26#39;t think that American%26#39;s belive their GOD%26#39;s! The visa problem is a direct result of America having such a liberal ';open'; borders policy in the past, however, since September 11th, 2001, the United States unfortunately could NO longer have a liberal policy of ';visitor'; visa%26#39;s. You could thank Osam Bin-Laden!

Having talked with the American embassy in Tbilisi and the Georgian embassy in Washington DC, it is VERY easy to obtain a 60 day vacation visa to America if you are originating from Tbilisi.

i%26#39; m planning my trip to georgia for a long time and i would be grateful if somebody knows how to get a letter of invitation to this country. surfing through the web with this intention in mind i found lots of websites offering this for a double of a price of an ordinary visa. Hi. I%26#39;ll be studying at Tbilisi State Medical University from September. What sort of things are there for me to do when I%26#39;m not studying? Also, how is the transport system? And what sort of nightlife, for a student? And I read about power shortages and stuff? Is it true? How is the telephone service? Thank You!

I haven%26#39;t lived there but I have spent some time there and have many friends that live there. The transport is easy, just jump on a minibus with the crowds of people or stop any taxi and you can get where you need to go. the metro is fast and easy too. There a quite a lot of transportation options. Sure, the power goes out but it%26#39;s all a part of the experience. Phone system is fine. The people are friendly and full of fun. Georgians are all about socializing. I am certain that you will enjoy yourself.

  • living in Tbilisi with young children

My husband may be offered a job transfer to Tbilisi. Although we%26#39;ve lived overseas before in the Balkans and Middle East, we never have lived abroad with our twin toddlers who are still very young! Thus, a new challenge into deciding whether now is the time to live abroad. And, is Tbilisi a comfortable place to transition for us?

My questions are mainly what is there to do in Tbilisi on a daily basis for young children who are not yet of grammar school age? Are the parks clean and safe? Are there zoos, playgrounds, puppet shows, tumbling, dance or swim classes, or indoor activities?

Is it expensive to buy items for children like diapers, clothes, toys, etc?

Does anyone have experience with Quality Schools International? Are there any English preschools for 2-3 year olds?

    Thank you! Alex

living in Tbilisi with young children

Tbilisi%26#39;s a great (and inexpensive) place to live, lots of outdoor restaurants and plenty for the kids to do. There are English speaking schools and plenty of people to ask here about places for English speaking pre-schoolers or an inexpensive nanny, which would probably be cheaper than you%26#39;d think. But you could also consider plunging the kids into a mixed environment so they can pick up Georgian and help you out when you get lost for words in a shop.

Clothes and toys are in plentiful supply and probably no more expensive than you%26#39;d be used to in the M.E. or the Balkans. My guess would be that if you liked the Balkans you%26#39;ll love Georgia.

To be honest, it%26#39;s NOT the tidiest place on the planet, as the Georgians (in general) don%26#39;t seem to care too much about where they throw their rubbish away, but it%26#39;s compensated for by the stunning scenery of Georgia and also the bustling tree-lined, hilly streets of Tbilisi in the summertime.

    Hotel help!?

Me and my wife will be part of the Tartan Army that will visit Tbilisi for the football match in October. The problem is, we dont really know which hotel to book. It has to be central, in the middle of town, and of a reasonable standard. I am aware of the likes of the Marriot, etc., but if there are any hidden gems, I%26#39;d appreciate the advice.

Thanks in advance for the help, and see you in October. (Remember to have the bars well stocked!!);-)

    Hotel help!?

Any hotehl will be ok.Tbilisi Marriot or maybe hotel Varazi

Here is a link of some hotels

    Maybe it will help you

    http://www.georgica.caucasus.net/hotels.htm

    Good luck

    Hotel help!?

Thanks for the responses. We have booked into the Hotel Primavera. Hoping this is a good centrally located hotel.

Thanks again to those who replied.

I%26#39;m not exactly sure where that hotel is but most places are within walking distance of the main attractions. The match is being played at Dinamo%26#39;s stadium, which is either a long walk or you%26#39;re better off familiarising yourself with a local ex-pat bar beforehand, where you%26#39;ll be able to pre-arrange a taxi to take to you to the stadium, or simply just get talking to one of the ';local'; ex-pats who you could tag along with (there%26#39;ll be plently going). The police will probably close the roads to the stadium resulting in the usual traffic chaos that no-one here is really surprised about any more.

Probably the most English-speaking-friendly bar to try is the Hangar Bar, where you%26#39;ll get all the information you need to get by, or you could try the Vera Steak House, which is in the small park next to the big, round, ';Philharmonia'; theatre. Your best bet to find these places is to get your hotel to arrange a taxi for you. The Hangar is in a side street called Shavtelli Street, a very short walk up a lane from ';The Ambassadori'; Hotel car park, which most taxi drivers will know. The Steak House is a little harder to find but worth checking out for a good feed and live music most nights (depending on how long you%26#39;re staying - worth staying on a few days if you can).

The local beer is cheap and ok, or you can get the usual stuff like Heineken in most places.

A couple of tips - don%26#39;t flash a lot of money (or cameras/fancy phones etc.) on the streets. Cash points are in plentiful supply but you%26#39;re better off using one in either a hotel, bank or supermarket, which is a safer than taking money out of one on the street. Both of the Marriott hotels have cash machines, as does the supermarket over the road from McDonald%26#39;s on Rustavelli Avenue.

Also, taxi%26#39;s are cheap - not as cheap as the buses or the metro - but you should expect to pay no more than 5 Lari (about £1.50) for most journeys in the city. 10 Lari would probably get you an invite to the taxi driver%26#39;s village to meet all his family.

hi mmetbs and citizens of the republic of georgia

like my compatriot mr sporran, i am looking forward to visiting tbilisi for the football in october and i wonder if you could tell me if the bars and clubs stay open late during the week (particularly sunday - wednesday)?

also, a group of us are planning on travelling to yerevan the day after the match. we would like to go by train but it seems that the only direct service is overnight which is not ideal as we would like to take in some scenery en route. could you recommend a travel agency where we could possibly hire a people carrier or minibus and driver to take us into armenia?

    any help much appreciated.

    greg.

    Greg,

The bars usually stay open for as long as there are people there propped up with money in their pockets. No worries on that front - particularly around the time of the match.

Getting down to Yerevan? Probably easiest to find a local driver to drive you down. The train or minibus are the cheapest option but probably a little difficult for you to arrange if you%26#39;re only here a short time (unless you have someone from here going with you who can sort it all out for you). I%26#39;ve never been down on the train - we went in a packed out minibus which took about 5 hours. I think it cost about a tenner. There%26#39;s an Avis in the Marriott Courtyard where you can hire a car and driver (I guess), but it would be a bit pricey.

My girlfriend took a taxi down there recently - I think it cost about 60 quid one way. You could probably do a deal with a minibus or taxi driver to take you down there and bring you back. The driver would need to find himself room for the night in Yerevan, but that should be pretty easy (either that or he could sleep in his car/minibus). How many of you do you reckon would want to go down there?

A quick word about entry visas for Armenia - it%26#39;s pretty easy - you can get one at the border (I think it was about 20 dollars) which they call a transit visa. This gives you 4 days before you have to leave Armenia. Probably best to carry a couple of spare passport photos with you for the visa form you have to fill in.

mmetbs, is it right that it is 60 pounds for a cab from Tbilisi to Yerevan? Sorry, I don%26#39;t quite know that nicknames for money units.

Yes, there were 3 of them who went down by taxi. It cost them about 50 or 60 Georgian Lari each, and there%26#39;s about 3.3 Lari to the pound.

I%26#39;m not sure how much the train costs - maybe 10 pounds one way.

    Max1856,

    A few more exchange rates...

    1 Georgian Lari = about US$1.68

    1 Beer (local) = about 2 Lari

    1 Beer (foreign) = about 5-6 Lari

A meal for two in an expat bar with a couple of beers will probably set you back about 50-60 Lari

A cab fare between most places in the centre of the city should cost no more than about 5 Lari

Tip - don%26#39;t fumble about with big wads of cash either on the street or in taxis. Taxi drivers will likely see that as a cue to double the fare. It%26#39;s best to agree the fare before you get into the car because none of them have any idea what a fare structure is so they usually shrug their shoulders when you get there and ask, hoping you give them a 10 Lari bill, for which they never seem to have change for.

I%26#39;ve been here about 5+ years and I still carry a small amount of low value notes in a separate pocket, folded so that the smallest bills are on the outside. It%26#39;s not too bad on the main streets, in the day time, but the summer months bring all sorts of people out of the woodwork here and a quick snatch of your money will probably net some opportunist more money than they would earn in a month.

Finally, a tip for the Tartan Army - there%26#39;s still a few guns and knives out on the streets, so try not to get into any arguments with the locals. Most people are good normal folks but drink, a big footie match, and plenty of relatively rich (%26amp; probably drunk) foreigners coming into the city are a recipe for trouble. Be sensible and you%26#39;ll have a great time here.

thanks for all your sound advice mmetbs

music to my ears regarding the bars!-)

we are staying in the courtyard so avis would certainly be handy - there will be at least 8 of us travelling to yerevan so the cost shouldn`t be too prohibitive.

are there any places en route that you know of that would be worth stopping at either for a leisurely lunch or some overnight shenanigans.

re your final tip - sounds just like glasgow!

    regards,

    greg.

There%26#39;s a small roadside barbecue stop on the way down (it%26#39;s about 30-45 minutes on from the Armenian border) which is as good as anywhere to stop for something to eat. You can get Kebab or shashlik (BBQ bits of meat on a skewer) there. Apart from that there%26#39;s just small villages and great scenery all the way down.

    Official Flag of Georgia

Could someone please tell me what the Georgian flag looks like. I have looked it up on the Internet and found two flags--one red and white and one with a deep red background and a small square in the upper left corner which is (I believe) black and white.

    Thanks

    Official Flag of Georgia

    Here you go: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_%28country%29

The one with the dark red background and black/white square is the flag of Democratic Republic of Georgia (1918–1921) now known as today%26#39;s Georgia.

    Official Flag of Georgia

    theus50.com/.../state-flags/georgia-flag.jpg

i didn%26#39;t check the other link, but I believe this is the current one. They have changed it within recent years to remove the confederate symbolism, and I think it took them a try or two to decide which way to go... So, that explains the confusion.

i would like to know if many people speak english there?

i found alot of people did in kiev but not so many in minsk.

    thanks alot guys.

    Do many locals speak English?

Although English is spoken in most major places (hotels etc) many of the smaller places do not. However, please don%26#39;t let that put you off. Tbilisi this time of the year is very pleasant and if you get a chance to visit Batumi and Kobuleti on the Black Sea I%26#39;ve no doubt you will come back year after year.

I see you are from England. Are you there now and what part do you come from. I%26#39;m a Hampshire Hog myself.

    Do many locals speak English?

    Hi

I was in Tbilisi in march 06 visiting a friend for ten days and I have to say its an amazing place. The people are lovely and some do speak english. I suppose I was lucky I was with an Irish mate and his Georgian friends so I was driven all over the place including Gauadri which is a ski resort.Although I dont ski we went up to the top on the ski lift and at about 12,000 high its the most amazing view in the world. The old building in the city are stunning but the new ish russian ones are ugly but somehow interesting. Disco in Marriott on fri or sat can, shall I say be an interesting experience to say the least. Big russian communications tower on the hill (think its now used for tv and mobile) is right out of a spy movie. On the way up there, there is a stretch of road and when you stop the car on the downward slope take the car out of gear and release the brakes the car goes backwards up the hill...... wierd! Gold market is good fun and seems cheap, also seems to be ligit. They have an old part to Tbilisi which has now been revamped and has some nice restaurants inc chinese.. cheap too. An Irish bar with no Irish and another bar called the Hanger Bar with an American lady running it. Lots of guys in black leather jackets looking shifty but after a day or two I discovered I wasnt at a mafia convention its just the way they are, posturing but not doing any harm. Cops drive aroung with their lights flashing all the time like something is happening but there isnt. Luftansa fly from Munich and I didnt need a visa being an EU citizen. Think Air Turkey fly there too via Istanbul.

Knowing your not in the eu is part of the charm so go see...Wine is good and the food good too. Dont bother with the casino. There are three old churches of different denomations within metres of each other in Tbilisi and everyone gets on with it without any trouble... maybe we could learn something from the Georgians.

They have a street there on the way from the Airport called George W Bush street but none called Putin street. Strange !!!!

    Enjoy

    Hi again

I stayed in the HOTEL PRIMAVERA which is just off the main street. About 100 us a night, it was ok, a bit 70%26#39;s,big room tv bathroom, but nothing to write home about.. Marriott was over 200 which I thought was taking the pi** a bit.

    http://www.georgica.caucasus.net/hotels.htm

    miyar

thanks very much for that info.

We are coming to Tbilisi in October for a week for the football. We originally booked the Primavera, but subsequently changed to the Courtyard. Got a great rate via Expedia.

Cant wait. Looks like such a fantastic place.

In tbilisi people (mainly young generation) speak English, In small towns and villages Russian is spoken but not english.

If you are going to Tbilisi and you will be looking for a guide (students who charge little ) you can email igoder@hotmail.co.uk

This lady helped my friends finding a guide. also she lets her house which is a very nice 2 storey house in tbilisi centre and is much cheaper than any hotels.

I think my friends paid $30 a day, for the whole house.

you can also get a small dictionary on the main street (Rustaveli) and take it with you if you go anywhere else than Tbilisi, as you will have a need for it:)

    all the best.

very good hotel, No negative comments

everything was just perfect: the room, service, breakfast (just great),all are wonderful people and outstandingly helpful, my wife and me were impressed so nice hotel

very good hotel, No negative comments

    Which hotel....????

Admittedly, this is taken from a rather unreliable %26#39;rag%26#39; here in Scotland.

  • Tbilisi to Batumi

    No Visas for EU visitors

    Hi

I just read in the Observer that EU people can visit without visas and that there are direct flights. Has anyone out there attempted this and who flies direct. I tried to find the Tbilisi airport website to check out arrivals and I couldn%26#39;t.

I%26#39;ve just ordered the Lonely Planet guide to Georgia but any other advice on what to do, where to stay and what to see and when to visit would be gratefully appreciated.

I have a feeling this will be an extremely interesting city to visit.

    Thanks

    Jackie

    No Visas for EU visitors

I%26#39;ve not attempted the flights but British Airways has non-stop flights to Tbilisi (operated by BMED). Tbilisi airport website is www.airport.ge

    No Visas for EU visitors

    Jackie,

I travel to Tbilisi monthly from Baku, the rumor is true concerning visa for visitors from the EU you don%26#39;t need one! I wouldn%26#39;t think that the Tbilisi airport has a website just yet. But there are flights from most European hubs on most major carriers.

Suggest you get Mark Elliott%26#39;s ';Azerbaijan with Excursions to Georgia'; for a more comprehensive guide to Georgia.

It is exciting, have a bottle of wine, it%26#39;s some of the best I%26#39;ve had.

    John P.

Hello Jackie, I don%26#39;t think Tbilisi airport has a website yet, but I%26#39;ll try to help you as much as I can. You can fly to Tbilisi non stop flights from London, Amsterdam, Paris, Prague, Moscow and Istanbul ( I think that%26#39;s it).

Best time to visit is September-October and/or April, May, June. If you like hot weather you can go in summer too. I wouldn%26#39;t recomend going in winter.

Regarding hotel... Depends how much you want to spend per night. There are big hotels like Marriott and Sheraton and also there are smaller private hotels (most of them are called Inns) pretty nice ones. If you want to stay on the main street in the city, that would be Marriott or Marriott Courtyard (also on the main street).

City is so old and has so many places to go and see that it would take me forever to write everything.

My brother works with a lot of tourists (groups, family, single) in Tbilisi so if you are interested, email me at maskmar@chrobinson.com and I%26#39;ll give you his email address and phone #.

    Good luck.

Usually Visa is required but you get it at the airport customs for $20 or so.(please check with embassy before you travel)

The Airport code is TBS and some European companies fly there ( i think BA discontinued)

Also, you can fly by Georgian airways http://airzena.com/main.php#results, you may not get much service as you would expect from major airlines but you get what you pay for.

The city is something indescribable: if you heard about it that is it you gotta go an see it! I would not recommend winter time unless you like skiing. There is a great ski resort called Gudauri just 2-3 hours drive from TBS, at 3000m above sea level you get really good skiing.

There is lot of things to see in Tbilisi and Summer/fall/spring is best time for it.

Georgia is famous with there wines, songs and dances so try to attend the concert. As far as wine testing goes, you will find plenty of that J

    Good Luck

    Hi,

I guess its rather late reply but who knows someone else might be able to use info. I know that EU, US and other major areas are exempted from visa. Entry is free. You might get just souvenir stamp in your passport.

    all the best,

    Levan

Actually the airport DOES have a website (www.airport.ge) but it is not updated as they are in the midst of a big privatization/reconstruction.

Absolutely all EU countries, USA and Japan can enter without fee or visa for up to 90 days. Almost all other nations can get their visas there at the airport, most for a fee of 10 or 20$ and good for 3 weeks to a month (depending on where you are from).

If you need to prolong your visa for any reason, just go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs consular office together with a Georgian friend (and his passport) and they can pretty easily make a new visa or stamp for you within a week.

since when was georgia in asia anyway?

I am planning to go to Georgia too, it is supposed to be the most beautiful ex-soviet country. And now since there are cheap direct flights from Riga to Tblisi, it is much easier to acces.

AirBaltic is offering currently the cheapest connections from major European cities to Tblisi. It will cost you you ca 350 EUR both way all included price which could be even cheaper than to take a direct flight. Tickets can be comfortably bought online www.airBaltic.com

Did you end up going to Tbilisi? I have been to Georgia a few times and have always found it a very rich experience. I am very interested in your reactions.

    Cheers!

The weather here is cooling down now after quite a hot summer. It%26#39;s difficult to say exactly what the weather will be like but you will certainly need a jacket etc.

Still up for that pint, though?

    fao C_B

    C_B,

Thanks for all the advice on this board it has been helpful.

Just to bother you with another question. Do you know of any ex pats who will be going to the match? The reason that I ask is that I have been told that there may be a section of the ground allocated for such fans. Apparently many are coming from Baku for the match. They asked the sfa if they could get ticlets with the Tartan Army but were told that was not possible.

I%26#39;m actually travelling over ticketless and hoping to get a ticket when I am there. Obviously, I%26#39;d like to be in with the Tratan Army but failing that it would probably be best being in with the ex pats. Do you know anything about this section and how to get tickets for it?

    fao C_B

    Hi McOne

I%26#39;m sorry but I have no idea about the ticket and stadium situation.

If you have no luck the greatest place to watch will be the Hangar Bar in Shevteli Street.

    http://www.thehangar.biz

Apparently one of the breweries is providing free beer there for Sottish supporters (not bad for an Irish pub)..!

Where will you be staying in Tbilisi. I can give you some directions to one or two places.

    C_B

    fao C_B

    Thanks C_B,

I intend to pop into the Hanger Bar at some point. I don%26#39;t think I am too far away in the Villa Mtiebi.

There is no way I wont be at the match though. Somehow I%26#39;ll get in.

I think you are owed a few pints for all the advice and information you are giving on here.

Thank you for that compliment. I have been on the Trip Advisor for some time. I joined when I was located in the Turks and Caicos Islands (hence Caicos_Boy.

I enjoy answering questions where ever I can. It%26#39;s a kind of hobby.

    Local food and drinks

Any recommendations for sampling local food and drinks? Will addresses be hard to find for English-speakers due to street signs and maps? I%26#39;m in town for a week and interested in local cuisine and fermented beverages.

    Local food and drinks

There are so many places in Tbilisi to have good Georgian food. One thing Georgians love is good food and it is difficult to find a place that is not up to scratch.

One of my favourite places is Matroishshka (Russian for wooden doll).

Their food is excellent, the music is good and the service is probably the best in Tbilisi.

    Savannah GA

We have planned two days in the historic district of Savannah GA. What are the things we don%26#39;t want to miss?

    Savannah GA

I don%26#39;t know if you have already left for Savannah, I would suggest getting on one of the tours at the visitors center and get a ideal of the area. then on the 2nd day you can use the public transporation which is free to get about. The best thing to do is just to stroll around the historic district. Savannah is one of the best ';walking cities'; in the USA. If you enjoy old houses, parks and squares you will love Savannah. We enjoyed the Telfair Museum, the Riverfront area is very nice. the fountain in Foryseth Park. is beautiful. I wasn%26#39;t impressed with the Riverboat Cruise, you just went up the river and came back, mostly indusrial shipping scenery. have fun.

There are newspapers you can have a look to spot the adverts( Georgian Person has to help you in this) or I know one lady%26#39;s property in Tbilisi centre and can give you her details. She lets her house daily and monthly and you can save a lot if you rent privatly than stay in hotels.

We were over in wonderful Tbilisi in October and stayed at the Marriot Courtyard. It certainly wasn%26#39;t inexpensive but was very good indeed, even if the bar closed inexplicably early one night. Perhaps the ';dress-wearing'; men visiting the city that week had drank it dry. ;-)

Thanks for your recent compliments. You actually posted on my birthday. We spent the night of the 26th in the Ambasadori night club then at midnight went back to the Hangar. At 9 minutes past 12 Rebecca poured more Kazbegi than she had for the whole weekend.

    Why 9 minutes past 12..??

That%26#39;s actually the time I was born and apparently I was the first registered birth in England on that day in 1950.

Is the Ambasadori club part of the hotel? Just a wee bit of research before we visit again. We both miss the place and look forward to returning some day. The world%26#39;s such a small, yet large, place. Hope that makes some sense.
