Georgia--recent events impacting travel/tourism?

Hello--

I had been tentatively planning a trip to Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia next year. However, seeing the recent military events taking place on the news, I%26#39;m wondering if I should plan something else.

Is there anyone actually in Georgia, who can give a quick summary on if life is going pretty much normal, or if things are drastically different? Are tourist hotels open, restaurants, museums, etc? How about transport around the country (other than to the impacted areas directly), and going overland to/from Armenia and Azerbaijan?

I know that our news sometimes sensationalizes things, so it would be great to get a local%26#39;s view. Thanks!

I would love to know the answer to this question, as well. The US media was reporting the evacuation of US citizens yesterday. Around 150 were bussed out of the country.

Even if you are unable to make the trip next year, I hope you see Georgia at some point. I was lucky to visit Georgia in 2004 and it was lovely. The people were so kind and the food is, hands down, my absolute favorite of any of the former Soviet bloc (including Russia). It was still quite Soviet in many ways as far as bureaucracy and random nonsense. The roads were horrible and much of the housing is pretty sub standard. Still, after living in Saint Petersburg for over a year in an area just off the tourist track, the same things can be said about that city as well.

I hope someone in Georgia responds soon, mainly to let us know that they are OK.

hello desert_gecko, Jetskipper

actually i live in Tbilisi, geogia and can answer on these or any other question.

say in sincerity, i wouldn%26#39;t advice anyone visit any place in georgia for tourist purposes for next some weeks, and i%26#39;m sure it%26#39;s not surprise for you. officially military operation is stopped, but russian troops are still here, and noone can predict what they will do and where they will decide to go.

living in Tbilisi is still safe, and i sleep calmly at nights, but it doesn%26#39;t mean that in georgia everything is OK

you was talking about next year - I hope till the next year situation will be not just better than now, but even better than a month ago, and there will be no problem to receive tourists. now it%26#39;s impossible to say what will be even a month later

it%26#39;s not the right forum to speak about military or political themes. if you are interested to know deeper about situation in georgia please write me at Tbilisianhere@gmail.com, or on PM

Hope peace will come to georgia soon

best wishes

I came back from Georgia three weeks ago and we had a great time. We made sure not to go to those areas in conflicts but I guess during the last couple of weeks it has gotten a lot worse. I mean we almost went to Gori and the Russians started to bomb it last week, that was just crazy. It feels a bit weird to just have been there but my guess is that Tblisi will still be pretty safe. Tough to say though, let%26#39;s hope for the best for potential travellers and the georgians.

thank you all for these wishes and sympathy. hope very soon whole georgia will be safe and much more beautiful than now or even month before

and hope then we will meet in georgia

best wishes to all
